I mean... What was I expecting?

corrixisdead responds:

exactly

This starts out promisingly, simple but effective square synth. The bit at 0:26 feels a bit empty, I know this is on purpose, but I would reccomend putting in some ambient sounds to fill the empty space; just something subtle. There's also the vocals, I don't really like that kinda stuff in dubstep, but whatever other people do...

Then there's the drop. I just want you to know I don't think it's trash, I had to give this a 3.5 because of the issues, but I think it shows promise. I'm guessing that's a granulizer, or maybe Serum (I don't have Serum, but from what little I've seen it looks like it makes basses from samples in a similar way to how a granulizer can). It's a pretty cool "bass", but it's way too much on the high end, it's too "light". It doesn't have as much "momentum" or "impact" to it as it should. Now you could either change the sound by making it more low pitched (if you are using samples then you could take a lower pitched sample), or you could keep the sound as it is, but put a reese bass under it. I mean, it doesn't have to be a reese, but just some "heavy" bass under the other synth, I just think a reese would do the job pretty well... I at this point I was bordering on a 4, but I have to give this 3.5 still, because as well as this the drop isn't very varied. It's that one sound, a guitar and vocals. It doesn't have to be super varied, but I find these more experimental "basses" work well in smaller doses. That brings me onto the final problem with the drop, it sounds kinda empty. This is easily solved, just put some chords or an arp under everything, but it's still there.

Then there's the percussion, choosing a clap over a bassy, powerful snare doesn't seem right for dubstep. It's just too weak. I know claps are easier to master, so I'm guessing since this is apparently your first track, you chose them 'cause you were struggling with snares. I'm sorry if that isn't true, I don't like to assume negative things; but I did it in the past, and I wouldn't blame you if you have. All I can say is, I'd reccomend against it. It's probably gonna be hard, and you won't get results fast, but try learning to make some good snares. Again; sorry if that isn't the case, I'm not trying to patronise you, it's just really hard to see how experienced you are from this piece. Some thimgs would lead me to say novice, some pro.

From there on out, not much more to say, just maybe add a kick to that ending to make it more powerful. Overall promising, while flawed track. It's closer to a 4 than a 3 to me, so I voted 4 for you ;). Just fill these tracks up and make sure your sounds have power, but the result is still entertaining. I'll have my eye on you to get you scouted.

Amethystic responds:

Thanks so much for the opinion, you are right, i kinda felt like it's empty too but i really couldn't do anything to make it sound good. And yes, i use samples and i'll try to do what you told me. The vocals, i've put them there just cuz i feel like it gives the track a little bit more life.

Thanks again !

Good quality, but TBH kinda boring...

Also, do you put bagels in the tags of ALL your music?

GalacticPenguinz responds:

Maybe, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Bullet point review:

- The buildup is long and monotonous, it REALLY overstays its welcome...

- The beat is pretty sweet, if a bit light, got a lot of swing and momentum

- The bitcrushed speaking wobble is really clean

- It's also the only dubstep synth here...

GalacticPenguinz responds:

Yeah, this was mostly an experiment, I'll keep that in mind next time. Thanks for the feedback!

Pretty good, really nails the atmosphere and adds more kick to it. Still I must say, I thought this was a bit lacking in variety. The synths themselves were very good but everyone gets sick of any synth after hearing it too many times...

I was also disappointed to see the fast-paced aggressive stabs left out of this remix, they were my favourite part of the original. Still the amazing synths and soundscaping gets this a 4 In my books, despite its repetitiveness.

I was going to remix this after my melodic dubstep remix of Ice Cap Zone went so well, I'll see how it goes and if I come up with anything good, but it seems you covered track pretty good. If it doesn't work out, our listeners will still have a great remix of the track in this.

Schematist responds:

Thanks for the feedback . Honestly, a big part of me wants to try remixing this song again. Only because it is one of my favorites from the series and I learned a lot since I made this track. I would love to see your perspective on this track when you get around to it. Now I have to find your ice cap zone remix though. Cheers!

Wait... I made a melodic dubstep track called ascension before this... Zyzyx... Are you taking some ideas from me? XD

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

I've actually had the name for a few months lol! Thanks for the review mate :D

WOW, that was beautiful! I was looking for a good song for a GD level that would take place in a sky-based paracosm with space elements in the background, but I thought there was no way I'd find a song on NG that fit my requirements, but this did!

It really nails the ethereal mood in music, where it's all in the mastering.

I usually say more In my reviews, but there isn't much to talk about here, as it succeeds on a massive scale but in a basic way. There aren't many flaws to talk about. The only complaints I have are:

1. The cymbal swells are sound WAY too much like just white noise, it's unpleasant and breaks the immersion with its juxtaposition from the rest of the piece, at least reduce the high end volume...

2. There isn't much variety in the synths at all, as good as this piece is, sometimes I can't hear much difference from part to part...

kylermannn responds:

Haha, glad you liked it man. I definitely know what you mean about the symbols sounding like garbage and the synths lacking any varience, though. I definitely agree with that.

Back when I made this, I would shove way too many saws n stuff together, make them play the same notes at the same time, I wouldn't EQ ANY of it, and everything would sound suuuper over saturated. You can hardly even hear the cymbals, basses, and snares in each chorus haha. I would also leave the limiter on the master, so pretty much everything I made back then would have way too much noise going on at one time, and then it would all get mega compressed / limited. This is probably why the cymbal swells are so jacked up. I'm definitely not saying I'm a pro at it all now, but a lot of my earlier stuff makes me cringe pretty hard.

Also, I can take a whack at making it sound a bit better if you'd like me to, just let me know :]

Wow, das' preddy damn dank!

The instrumentation at the beginning is a bit lacking, but what's there combines very well. The beginning drones on a bit, but it's not too bad. The vocals are integrated pretty well and show an impressive amount of variety, so wherever it's from is a good choice of source, for some reason I thought it was Invader Zim at first! XD

Then the drop, you definitely got hard hitting down, it'd sound fitting at a rave or something with all the energy and artificialness; for lack of a better word, to it. You got some nice, but simple frequency sliding, although I think they hold for a little too long. You also got some sweet speaking and wobbling bass that you can clearly tell, is very well made, and quite fast too! My only complaint with this drop is it's a bit generic, but you did generic well, so I'm not docking points for that.

I will dock points for a few things that bugged me though... The main problems I had that prevented this from being a 5-star were: 1. The 2nd half is virtually identical 2. Bad ending 3. It does what it does well, but it doesn't have much variety... Those 3 things combined added up to only -0.5 stars in my eyes, so don't worry about it ;)

Great job. I gotta say, since you offered to collab with me, I thought you'd also be kinda a noob. This clearly shows you're way ahead of me, which makes me even more grateful for the offer! =D Still, don't worry, I'm starting to catch up. I recently tried some things in harmour which kinda sound kinda like Xtrullor, and I'll be experimenting with these sounds soon, hopefully these techniques will make me a better dubstep maker and one worthy of collabing with you. =)

GobSmacked responds:

aww thx man. Really appreciate every review and opinion :D

This is pretty good, but simple. It doesn't try to do much, but it achieves what it tries to do perfectly! I like it, only problem is the drop gets very loud very suddenly, still great! I'm definitely using this one in GD! =) In fact this is perfectly what I was looking for, a simple but effective, video-game-like song!

Bentendo64 responds:

Thanks! I tried to make a calm, yet electronic feel to it. Glad you liked it! :)

I make Dubstep.
